Adrian Gonzalez refused to stay at Donald Trump’s hotel

Adrian Gonzalez

Adrian Gonzalez refused to stay at a hotel bearing Donald Trump’s name earlier this season during a trip to Chicago.

The LA Daily News shared the story on Sunday of Gonzalez not staying with the rest of the Dodgers at the Trump International Hotel and Tower during a trip to Chicago to play the Cubs in May.

“I didn’t stay there,” Adrian Gonzalez confirmed. “I had my reasons.”

Gonzalez’s reasons were seemingly due to politics. As the Republican party’s presidential nominee, Trump has said he will build a wall around Mexico. He also has said other disparaging things about Mexicans. Gonzalez is Mexican-American and has spent plenty of time in Mexico, so he clearly took Trump’s words personally.

The Dodgers typically stay at the Trump hotel in Chicago when in town to face the Cubs, but they did not for the first two games of the NLCS. The Daily News’ JP Hoornstra says that is because the Trump required a non-refundable deposit on the rooms, and the Dodgers did not want to commit to that because at the time there was uncertainty about whether they would advance in the playoffs.

It seems like everything worked out well in the end.
