Alex Bregman saves run with stellar defensive play in Game 7

Alex Bregman

Alex Bregman and Brian McCann combined for a stellar defensive play in Game 7 of the ALCS that saved the Houston Astros a run, helping them maintain their lead against the New York Yankees.

Greg Bird doubled to lead off the fifth, and Aaron Hicks walked two batters later, giving the Yankees runners on the corners with one out. Todd Frazier then hit into a fielder’s choice to Bregman. The Astros third baseman knew he wouldn’t have been able to turn two with the ball, so he threw home to McCann. His throw home could not have been placed more perfectly, and McCann applied the tag to get Bird out and keep Houston up 1-0.

The great defensive play came half an inning after Evan Gattis put the Astros on the board with a solo home run, so it helped Houston keep momentum. Then in the bottom of the fifth, Jose Altuve also homered, giving the Astros a 2-0 lead and more of a cushion.
