Alex Gordon: Mike Moustakas ‘got screwed’ in free agency

Mike Moustakas

It’s safe to say the free agency process left a lot of players bitter, even those who weren’t directly involved.

Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas got a particularly raw deal, coming off a 38-homer season only to settle for a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the team he expected to leave.

Teammate Alex Gordon feels the market failed Moustakas.

“I’ll say it. He got screwed over,” Gordon said, via Rustin Dodd of the Athletic. “You think about the year he had last year. He’s a World Series champ. He’s done it in the playoffs. He hit nearly 40 home runs last year in one of the hardest parks to hit home runs. And to get what he got? Yeah, he got screwed.”

Moustakas was far from the only player to fall well short of the contract he envisioned getting when he hit the open market. That said, some would argue that he made some bad decisions to lead to that point.
