Alex Rodriguez says he will retire after contract expires in 2017

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez says he intends to retire after the 2017 season when his contract expires.

Rodriguez told ESPN’s Andrew Marchand of his intentions on Wednesday.

Rodriguez will be 42 when his contract ends, so this is pretty logical. The Yankee DH-third baseman defied all expectations in 2015, returning after a lengthy suspension to hit 33 home runs. He’ll be due $42 million over the next two years. He has 687 career home runs, which means he will need to hit 28 over those two years to pass Babe Ruth on the all-time list, a prospect that he says he finds overwhelming.

A-Rod will have some time to think about how he wants to spend his retirement, but you can bet that spending some time with his new lady friend may well be on the list. Perhaps he’ll also take a look at TV, as he worked for Fox during the 2015 World Series.
