Anthony Rizzo expected to be placed on DL for first time in career

Anthony Rizzo

Anthony Rizzo is expected to go on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

The Chicago Cubs first baseman did not play in the team’s past three games and was not scheduled to be in the lineup on Monday because of tightness in his back.

The Chicago Sun Times’ Gordon Wittenmyer reports that the Cubs are expected to place Rizzo on the 10-day DL retroactive to Friday, which would make him eligible to play next week against the Cardinals.

Rizzo says he has experienced back tightness in the past and that a few days of rest usually is enough for him to heal. This time it’s lingered, so the team is trying to play it safely so that it doesn’t become a nagging issue.

The 28-year-old is batting just .107 (3-for-28) this season. Victor Caratini will continue to see action at first in Rizzo’s absence.
