Barry Bonds: Bryce Harper ‘doesn’t compare to me yet’

Barry Bonds being back in baseball means we get his thoughts on the current state of the game, as well as the players playing it.

The all-time home run leader and current Marlins hitting coach weighed in on Harper, and how well the Nationals slugger compares to him.

“He is a beast,” Bonds said, via MLB.com’s William Ladson. “[But] he doesn’t compare to me yet. He has a long way to go [in order to be compared] to me. He is not even close to me. But he is one hell of a ballplayer. I watch him, I admire and I look at him and I’m in awe. You don’t see that often.”

It’s not really stated whether Bonds was asked to compare Harper to himself or went there on his own, but of course the youngster isn’t at Bonds’s level. He’s still just 23, and he has a long career ahead of him if he wants to match Bonds’s numbers. The fact that he has the talent to do it is a pretty high compliment all the same.

Of course, even with Bonds in retirement, one of the sport’s premiere sluggers supposedly doesn’t even compare to him in the power department.
