Bryce Harper skipping Home Run Derby after dad’s surgery

Bryce-Harper-Nationals

Those who were looking forward to seeing Bryce Harper participate in the Home Run Derby at this year’s MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati are going to be disappointed.

The Washington Nationals superstar declined an invitation to swing in the event, largely because he won’t have his dad to pitch to him.

“Not having my dad throwing to me is a big issue for me,” Harper said. Harper adds that his father “throws strikes” and knows where his “sweet spot” is.

Harper’s dad, Ron, had rotator cuff surgery after a snowboarding accident and will not be available to pitch to his son. He did throw to Bryce at the Home Run Derby in 2013, which was won by Yoenis Cespedes.

At least Harper will play in the All-Star Game. He was the leading vote getter in the NL.
