Report: Cardinals may have interest in Marcell Ozuna

Marcell Ozuna

As the St. Louis Cardinals look to shore up their outfield, a team from across the National League may be of some assistance to them.

According to a report by Mark Saxon of ESPN on Monday, Miami Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is “one name to keep an eye on” with the Cardinals in the market for a center fielder.

Ozuna, 26, was an All-Star last season, hitting .266/.321/.425 with 23 home runs and 76 RBIs. He’s also on quite the agreeable deal — under team control through 2020 and entering his first year of arbitration eligibility in 2017.

The Cardinals are thin on outfielders with both Matt Holliday and Brandon Moss now free agents. Though Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk can hold down the fort, there simply isn’t very much depth left behind them.

Saxon also notes that the Cardinals have excess starters and the Marlins need rotation help. Ozuna has had his ups and downs in Miami, so there should be at least some intrigue to this storyline as the offseason progresses.
