Detroit Tigers plan to sell at trade deadline amid disappointing season

David Price

The Detroit Tigers are in a position not many expected from them entering the season: sellers at the trade deadline.

After starting off the season well, the Tigers fell in late May and June and now find themselves three games under .500 and 12.5 games out of first place in the AL Central. As a result, GM Dave Dombrowski confirmed Wednesday that he has notified other teams that his players are available in trades.

“We’re willing to listen to clubs’ offers on some of our free-agent players,” Dombrowski said via MLive.com.

Who are some of the pending free agents who could be moved? David Price, Yoenis Cespedes and Joakim Soria among others. Rajai Davis and Alex Avila could also be in the trade mix.

The first three players — especially Price — would be highly attractive to teams in the middle of the pennant chase.

This goes to show how quickly things can change in baseball. Last year at the deadline the Tigers acquired Price and then got swept in the playoffs. A year later they’re under .500 and looking to deal him as the Kansas City Royals have taken over the AL Central. Who saw that coming?
