Dodgers prospect Alex Guerrero lost part of ear after bite from teammate Miguel Olivo

Alex Guerrero ear

Dodgers prospect Alex Guerrero has been on fire lately with the bat, but it sounds like that’s not the only thing that’s been on fire for him.

According to FOX MLB reporter Jon Paul Morosi, Guerrero’s agent Scott Boras said Guerrero needed plastic surgery on his ear after having part of it “displaced” from a bite during a fight with teammate Miguel Olivo on Tuesday.

Guerrero is a Cuban defector who signed with the Dodgers in October. He and Olivo are teammates on the Albuquerque Isotopes, which is the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate. The two got in a fight during the eighth inning of the team’s game at Salt Lake City, which is when Guerrero lost the chunk.

Here’s a description of what happened via Milb.com:

The incident stemmed from an argument that occured during the bottom of the seventh inning when Berryhill called on reliever Colt Hynes to replace Matt Magill on the mound, according to Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune. At the end of the inning, Albuquerque players continued to argue as fielders returned to the dugout, and with Walter Ibarra batting in the top of the eighth, Luhm said the fight broke out. Isotopes players had to be seperated in the dugout, causing a brief stoppage of play in the top of the eighth. One player was pushed backward into the dugout fence, prompting other players to jump in. The fight was loud enough for fans to hear but did not involved prized Dodgers prospect Joc Pederson, who was on deck during the fray.

Here’s video of the argument that occurred in the seventh:

Salt Lake City Bees blog “Sting ‘Em Bees” believes Olivo was upset over a runner advancing without any of his teammates notifying him.

Police have gathered evidence and are interviewing witnesses concerning the matter.

Geurrero is batting .368 with 10 home runs in 32 games this season. Not featured on the back of his baseball card: the loss of one ear.
