Report: Dustin Pedroia could have serious wrist injury

Andre-Ethier-Pranks-Dustin-PedroiaThe defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox are currently in last place in the AL East, and the ineffectiveness of Dustin Pedroia is one reason why. Pedroia injured his wrist sliding sliding into second base during Boston’s home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 4. He has played through the injury, albeit not very well.

On Sunday night, Pedroia was scratched from the Red Sox lineup against the New York Yankees and sent back to Boston early. According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the team fears the wrist injury could be serious.

“He went down to hit early [Sunday] and the soreness continues to persist and probably gain in intensity,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “I think there’s probably a direct correlation to what we’ve seen at the plate.”

Pedroia has just five hits in his last 36 plate appearances. He has driven in just one run this season and is hitting .236. He has a history of thumb issues that he has been able to play through for the most part.

If Pedroia is seriously injured, it would obviously benefit the Red Sox to address the situation sooner rather than later. He’s much better off having a procedure done in mid-April than he would be after the All-Star break.
