Giants will pick up Matt Moore’s option despite shaky season

Matt Moore

The San Francisco Giants will pick up pitcher Matt Moore’s option for 2018 despite the starter enduring a shaky season.

Giants GM Bobby Evans confirmed to the Los Angeles Times’ Bill Shaikin the team’s plans for Moore.

“We’ll pick up his option,” Evans said via the Times.

Moore has a $9 million option for next season, and a $10 million option for the year after, which are both very reasonable prices (or bargains) if Moore can pitch back to his Tampa Bay form. The problem is Moore has not been very good with San Francisco.

The 28-year-old southpaw was only 6-5 with a 4.08 ERA after being acquired by San Francisco last season. This year he’s gone 5-14 with a 5.39 ERA. His 14 losses and 100 earned runs are the worst in the league.

There’s no doubt that Moore can be a special pitcher. The Giants are hoping that they see some of that next year and beyond.
