Gregory Polanco falls going after fly ball, loses game for Pirates (Video)
The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Chicago Cubs 11-10 in 12 innings Friday after right fielder Gregory Polanco fell to the ground trying to make the catch on a routine fly ball.
The Cubs were batting in the bottom of the inning and had the bases loaded with one out. Cubs left fielder Matt Szczur was up and facing a 3-1 count when he lifted a fly ball to shallow right. It was shallow enough for Polanco to make the easy play and even throw out the runner if Starlin Castro tried to tag. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, it never even came to that.
Polanco misread the ball, slipped, tripped, and fell to the ground as the ball landed just beside his hopeless body.
You rally from down 7-1 in the sixth, down 10-5 in the eighth, and score one in the 9th to tie the game, and then that’s how you lose. That has to stink for the Pirates.
Oh, and you know the internet had fun with this blunder. Here’s the play set to Stanky Leg:
