Hanley Ramirez addresses allegation, free agency in tweet

Hanley Ramirez

Hanley Ramirez on Sunday finally addressed the report tying him to drug allegations.

Ramirez, who has been a free agent since being released by the Boston Red Sox on June 1, said in a tweet that being a free agent is his choice. He also said he was “grateful” for those who did not spread the report about him.

On Friday, reporter Michelle McPhee said on the radio in Boston that Ramirez was tied to a drug bust in April. On Sunday, the Boston Globe published a story that essentially cleared Ramirez. Their story said that the man who was stopped by police with drugs in his car had mentioned Ramirez in an effort to get out of trouble. The man’s attorney said his client’s “use of Mr. Ramirez’s name was an ill-thought-out attempt to evade further police scrutiny.”

Ramirez’s agent also issued a statement on Sunday in which he said the reporting about the story was “reckless” and “irresponsible.”

The 34-year-old was hitting .254 with six home runs this season. Boston owes him the remainder of his $22 million salary for the rest of the season.
