Report: Indians have best deal on table for Aroldis Chapman

The winning bid for Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman may be coming from a fellow American League club.

According to a report by Bruce Levine of WSCR-AM on Sunday, the Cleveland Indians have the best offer on the table for Chapman. The Washington Nationals are also said to be “very aggressive” in their pursuit of the Cuban.

Word emerged late Saturday that the Yankees have been telling teams they’re close to trading Chapman but will keep Andrew Miller. The Chicago Cubs have been said to be very much in the mix for Chapman.

Chapman, 28, has recorded 20 saves for the Yankees this year with a 2.01 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP, and 44 strikeouts. Though the likes of Francisco Lindor, Danny Salazar, and their other attractive young pieces are likely close to untouchable, the Indians have a heap of talent to offer from the minor league level. Cody Allen has been an excellent closer for them with 77 saves over the past three seasons. But it may prove difficult for Cleveland to turn down a very real opportunity to land a scorcher like Chapman.
