Indians sacrifice chicken for Yan Gomes (Videos)
Earlier this season, members of the Indians created a shrine to Jobu that will surely make those who have seen the movie “Major League” smile. Prior to Saturday’s game, the team made a sacrifice to Jobu and the baseball gods.
Yan Gomes has been struggling at the plate this season and is sporting a .163 batting average in 69 games. He has just one hit in the month of July. With the baseball gods not being kind to the Indians catcher, his teammates gathered in the clubhouse to perform a ceremony aimed at helping Gomes out of his slump.
The ceremony included a chicken, Mike Napoli reading a speech, kazoos, and lots of laughter. Thankfully for us, Jason Kipnis recorded the events and shared them via his Instagram account in three parts. Here they are.
In 2014, Gomes hit .278 with 25 doubles, 21 home runs, and 74 RBI on the way to being named a Silver Slugger Award winner so we know he is capable of much more. Hopefully, Saturday will jump start Gomes’ season. If not, it’s back to the drawing board.
