Jerry Remy to miss rest of season

Jerry Remy NESNBoston Red Sox color commentator Jerry Remy will miss the rest of the season, the team and broadcast partner NESN announced on Thursday night.

Remy, who is the president of Red Sox Nation and a beloved Boston sports figure, is taking the rest of the season off in light of the murder tragedy surrounding his family.

Remy’s son, Jared, was arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend Jennifer Martel on Aug. 15. Jerry has not broadcasted since then.

“I am full of grief for the Martel family,” Remy said in a statement provided by NESN and the Red Sox on Thursday night, via the Boston Globe.

“My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to them. My wife and I are sick about this senseless tragedy. It’s clear this isn’t the time for me to return to broadcasting Red Sox games. It’s my hope that I can do so in the spring. I thank NESN and the Red Sox for their support through this nightmare.”

NESN said Remy would be welcomed back next season if he wants to return.

Remy’s son Jared has been in trouble with the law numerous times in the last 15 years. He has a history of domestic violence incidents and was part of a steroids scandal involving the Sox. Remy’s daughter Jenna also had a disturbing arrest in July.
