Jim Thome does not want Chief Wahoo on Hall of Fame plaque

Jim Thome will be going into the Hall of Fame with a Cleveland Indians cap on, but he has a specific preference regarding what he wants that cap to depict.

Thome said Friday that he would prefer to go into the Hall of Fame wearing a block “C” on his cap instead of Chief Wahoo, the logo that appeared on the cap during Thome’s time with the team.

“I know my decision would be to wear the ‘C’, because I think it’s the right thing to do,” Thome said, via Alex Hooper of 92.3 The Fan. “I fully support the way the Indians through this week have done the decision that they’ve done, and that’s what I support.”

Thome admitted that his final decision would be subject to discussions between Thome, his wife Andrea, and the Hall of Fame itself.

“The Hall of Fame is such a magical place, and a historical place,” he added. “I know Andrea and I, we’re going to go, and we respect everything about it, I think we’re going to have some thoughtful conversation once we go there.

“To be thoughtful, I think I need to have a conversation with the Hall of Fame because of all the history and everything involved. I just think that’s the right thing to do.”

The Indians’ recent decision to phase the Chief Wahoo logo out of their uniforms has made for an interesting decision here. If historical accuracy is the concern, Thome would go in wearing Chief Wahoo, but it’s probably best for everyone involved that his wish is granted and the block “C” appears on his cap instead.
