Joe Girardi still roots for Yankees

Joe Girardi

Joe Girardi may have been let go by the New York Yankees after last season, but he says he still pulls for the team.

Girardi spoke at the BTIG Charity Day in Manhattan on Wednesday and says he still roots for his former players.

“When you’re not part of a team and you’re not there on an everyday basis, your rooting interest is different. But, yeah, I pull for them. Those guys were a big part of my life the last 10 years,” Girardi said, via the New York Post.

“You develop relationships. So, yeah, you pull for people. I want to see the guys do well.”

Girardi managed the Yankees for 10 seasons, winning a World Series in his second year and losing in the ALCS three other times. The team went through a rebuild of sorts towards the end of his tenure as they moved on from the Derek Jeter/Mariano Rivera/Andy Pettitte days. The Yanks now have a pipeline of young talent in the system, and new manager Aaron Boone is set up to reap the rewards. In many ways, not being brought back came at a really disappointing time for Girardi.
