Report: John Farrell could be on hot seat if Red Sox lose in ALDS

John Farrell face

John Farrell could be on the hot seat in Boston if the Red Sox make an early exit in the playoffs, according to a report.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal wrote an article published Monday about managers on the hot seat (subscription required and recommended). In the article, Rosenthal mentions Farrell as a manager whose job could be in jeopardy.

Rosenthal says some believe Farrell could be replaced if Boston loses in the ALDS for the second year in a row. He notes that team president Dave Dombrowski could want to hire a manager of his choice, rather than the man he inherited. Brad Ausmus, who managed the Tigers when Dombrowski was there, was mentioned as a possible replacement.

Farrell won a World Series in his first season as Red Sox manager in 2013. The team then finished last in the AL East two straight years before bouncing back to win the division in consecutive seasons. They were swept out of the playoffs last year by Cleveland.

Farrell was part of the Sox’s sign-stealing controversy this year. A report earlier this season said players felt he didn’t back them enough in the media.

The 55-year-old manager is signed through 2015.
