Jose Reyes says he wants to finish his career with Mets

Jose Reyes is right where he wants to be.

Speaking with the media on Friday after he clubbed two home runs in a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the veteran New York Mets infielder said that he would like to finish his career with the team.

“Did I want to come here? For sure,” said Reyes, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. “Do I want to finish my career here? One hundred percent … At this point I just want to be here because it’s home for me and this is where I feel comfortable playing, but I don’t have that in my hands.”

Reyes, 34, is playing out a club-option year for $535,000 and will be a free agent after the season. This is his second stint with the Mets — he returned in 2016 after spending the first eight years of his career from 2003 to 2011 with them — and he is batting .238/.307/.402 with 12 homers and 47 RBIs in 2017.

It remains to be seen if the Mets will reciprocate Reyes’ interest in returning, as he does come with his fair share of baggage. But the four-time All-Star’s newfound versatility (he has manned a total of five positions for the team so far this season) and his second-half surge could help tip the scales in his favor.
