Mariners ‘very disappointed’ with Steve Clevenger’s controversial tweets

The Seattle Mariners issued a statement Thursday evening about the controversial anti-Black Lives Matter tweets sent by catcher Steve Clevenger.

Clevenger, who hit .221 in 22 games this season before being knocked out for the season with a broken hand, sent the following tweets from his Twitter account Thursday:

Steve Clevenger tweets

Clevenger’s tweets called the Black Lives Matter organization and President Obama “pathetic” and said everyone involved should be “locked behind bars like animals.”

Those are some harsh sentiments and highly inappropriate thoughts to share.

The Mariners sent a statement on the matter Thursday night in which they said they were “very disappointed” with Clevenger’s remarks. They also said they were considering all options, indicating potential discipline could be coming.

As if trading away MLB home run leader Mark Trumbo in the offseason to get Clevenger didn’t already look bad enough, these tweets should make Seattle feel even more uncomfortable about having Clevenger on the team.
