Report: Marlins in the mix for big-time closer

Mark Melancon Pirates

The Miami Marlins will be among the teams trying to add a big-time closer this offseason, according to a report.

Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports says the Marlins are intent on adding one of the three big closers on the market. The three closers teams are pursuing include Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon. Though Melancon isn’t as big of a name as the other two, he has been outstanding the last few years. He is believed to have multiple four-year offers, including one from the Giants. The Nats will also try to retain him.

Jansen and Chapman will likely command the most amount of money. Early reports had said the flamethrowing Cuban was seeking $100 million in his contract. And based on the recent success he’s had, Jansen probably won’t be too far behind.

Heyman previously reported that the Marlins had interest in Jansen because they want to create a “superpen” to compensate for a weak rotation. The strategy helped the Indians and Royals have tremendous success recently, but as the Yankees showed us last season, it doesn’t always work.
