Report: Marlins fired TV analyst for being too negative

The Miami Marlins reportedly parted ways with their TV analyst because he was too negative, according to a new report.

Tommy Hutton, who had served as the team’s television analyst for 19 years and covered both of their World Series winning seasons, was abruptly let go earlier in the week. A source close to the Marlins told the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson that Hutton was axed for being too negative.

Players reportedly complained that Hutton was too harsh, and owner Jeffrey Loria allegedly relayed to Hutton that he didn’t like the broadcaster’s complaints about Marlins Park’s huge dimensions.

“I know there were times I was negative, but I thought those times were called for,” Hutton told the Herald. “Ninety percent of what I said was positive. I tried not to be a homer, but you could tell I wanted the Marlins to do well.”

Hutton asked both FOX Sports and the Marlins if it was his criticisms that got him fired, and said he “couldn’t get a yes or a no” in response.

The Marlins haven’t had a winning season since 2009 and have lost at least 90 games in four of the last five years. Hutton seems to have done the best he can with the product on the field. At some point, it’s on the team to field a competitive group.
