Marlins, Giancarlo Stanton reportedly discussing $300 million deal

Giancarlo StantonThe Miami Marlins are talking about a contract extension with slugger Giancarlo Stanton that could set records.

According to FOX Sports MLB reporter Ken Rosenthal, the sides have discussed a 10-year, $300 million deal, which would be the largest contract in baseball history. Rosenthal says the sides have also discussed shorter-term deals.

Additionally, the Marlins are so adamant about keeping Stanton that they reportedly are willing to discuss a no-trade policy for the outfielder, which goes against usual club policy.

Stanton signing with the Marlins longterm would be a surprise. He was furious a few years ago when the team traded some of its best players to the Blue Jays a year after going on a free agency spending spree. Rosenthal suggests that Stanton may be encouraged by the progress the team showed last season, or because of fear following the injuries he suffered when hit in the face by a pitch.

If Stanton is willing to sign a massive deal with the Marlins, my guess is he would be doing so for financial security. There’s no way he wants to stay with the Marlins longterm, and he probably knows the team would trade him for prospects if things don’t work out well after a few years. Simply put: the chances of Stanton playing all 10 years with the Marlins is extremely slim, but the money would be guaranteed.
