Report: Matt Harvey ‘narrowly avoided’ bar fight over a girl

Matt Harvey MetsMatt Harvey still has some work to do if he wants to model his personal life after that of Derek Jeter. Early Thursday morning, a group of people Harvey was with supposedly got into a fight at a Manhattan nightclub.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, Harvey “narrowly avoided” being drawn into the scrum after a brawl broke out over a girl. Harvey’s friend was supposedly involved in the fight, but the New York Mets pitcher wisely chose not to throw himself into the mix.

“Matt was there with friends when a fight broke out over a girl between someone in his group and another group at a nearby table,” a witness reportedly told the Post. “Matt was right there. Somebody lunged at him and his group, he stepped aside and left. Security broke things up.”

A Mets representative said Harvey was not involved in any altercation at the club, The Gilded Lily, and that those who were were escorted out. Harvey’s rep confirmed that he was at the club when the fight broke out.

“It was an unfortunate incident,” the rep said. “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Whether he “narrowly avoided” the brawl or not, it sounds like Harvey did the right thing. Still, we never heard about Derek Jeter’s crew getting involved with anything like that. Is that because the internet wasn’t as big at the start of the captain’s career? That probably has something to do with it. Hopefully the fight had nothing to do with Harvey’s new girlfriend.
