Matt Harvey says he’d be open to talking extension with Mets

Matt Harvey Mets

Mets pitcher Matt Harvey says he’d be open to talking long-term contract with the New York Mets.

According to Harvey, he’d be willing to consider offers, but the Mets haven’t opened talks.

“I’ve never shied away from it, I never said I wouldn’t consider it,” Harvey said, via Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. “I haven’t heard anything about that.”

Harvey was able to stay healthy and effective in his return from Tommy John in 2015, so securing his future could be a decent idea. That said, Harvey is a Scott Boras client, and Boras clients almost always test free agency, which in the case of Harvey would come after the 2018 season. Harvey and the Mets didn’t always see eye-to-eye during the 2015 season, clashing over his innings limit, though those hard feelings appear to be in the past. Still, the odds of an extension are low for reasons completely unrelated to that – the Mets are reluctant to spend big, which is what Harvey would undoubtedly demand, and Boras wants to take his clients to free agency.
