Michael Conforto to undergo shoulder surgery for torn capsule

Michael Conforto

Michael Conforto is set to undergo shoulder surgery in the coming days, which will put his availability for the start of the 2018 season in question.

MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo first reported the news about Conforto, who has not played since leaving an Aug. 24 game with a shoulder injury. Conforto hurt his shoulder on a swing and was later diagnosed with a dislocation. An MRI also revealed a torn capsule in his left shoulder.

The 24-year-old outfielder was placed on the DL by the Mets late last month and was exploring all medical options before deciding on surgery. The team will have a better idea of his recovery timeline after the surgery.

A first-round pick out of Oregon State in 2014, Conforto began tearing up the minors instantly and shot through New York’s farm system, making it to the majors in 2015. He put together an All-Star season this year and finishes the season having batted .279 with 27 home runs and a .939 OPS.

The Mets have had a tough run with their outfielders, as Yoenis Cespedes is also out for the season with a hamstring injury.
