Middle school student admits to putting bleach in opponent’s Gatorade cooler

Gatorade-coolerA student at Gaffney Middle School in South Carolina was disciplined this week after admitting to putting a small amount of bleach in an opponent’s Gatorade cooler during a basketball game. Cherokee County School Superintendent Dr. Quincie Moore confirmed with WSPA that the student says he put about a cap-full of bleach into a seven-gallon container.

Students from both schools reportedly drank from the cooler. Fortunately, no one required medical attention and a few students only reported having burning mouths and upset stomachs. Cleveland Smith, a parent from Granard Middle School, told WISTV that his son did not feel well when he came out of the game and into the next day.

“He [Smith’s son] said once he came out of the game and started putting it to his lips said his mouth started burning but no one knew anything then,” Smith said. “He told me somebody text him (the following day) and told him they put bleach in the Gatorade.”

Moore said that the student and three students who witnessed the act have been punished, though she would not go into details.

“As sad and unfortunate as this situation is we are happy that it wasn’t any worse,” Moore said. “We will make sure we have oversight now, make sure we have procedures in place and that adults are supervising to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

Kids make mistakes and do dumb things all the time. We can only hope the student who was responsible for the act learned a lesson. A person could die from drinking bleach. Everyone involved is lucky the situation didn’t turn serious.
