Mike Scioscia downplays Shohei Ohtani’s latest struggles
Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia isn’t sweating another uneven outing from Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani struggled with his fastball command in a minor league game on Saturday, as he issued five walks, hit a batter, and uncorked two wild pitches, with scouts also finding lower velocity. Scioscia didn’t care, though, referring to the effort as a “great outing.”
“There were some things he was working on, he’s trying to nail down,” Scioscia said, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN. “When it’s in sync, it [his fastball] comes out hot. Early on, it was somewhat erratic. He’s working on some things. He’ll be fine.”
It’s safe to say that, despite some hand-wringing, Ohtani is set to make the team and be in the rotation. The Angels will be hoping that his spring, which saw him post a 27.00 ERA in two starts, represents an adjustment period and not the real thing.
