Mookie Betts could return from side injury on Thursday

Mookie Betts

Mookie Betts is expected to return to the Boston Red Sox lineup by the end of the week after dealing with a minor injury.

Betts missed his third consecutive game on Tuesday with what the Red Sox have called tightness in his left side. Betts reportedly felt some discomfort in the area during batting practice on Sunday prior to the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

Prior to Boston’s game on Tuesday, manager Alex Cora downplayed the severity of the injury, saying Betts would be playing if it were September and not May.

“He went out, he ran, but we’re staying away from him today,” Cora told MLB.com. “Most likely tomorrow, too, with the day game, but he’s doing better. As you guys know, it’s an area that you have to make sure he’s ready to roll. But he’s doing more stuff today. He was in the gym and he moved around, so we feel comfortable. If these games were in September, he’d be playing, but we’ve got to be smart about it.”

Cora also indicated when Betts might return to the Red Sox lineup.

“If he keeps improving. Thursday or Friday,” Cora said.

Betts could be in the midst of an MVP season. He currently leads the American Legaue in batting average (.359), runs scored (52), and slugging percentage (.750) He’s also second in doubles (19), home runs (17), stolen bases (13), and on-base percentage (.437).
