Orioles postpone another game; Ravens cancel draft party due to protests

Freddie Gray Orioles protest

Both the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens have been forced to alter their schedules as a result of the ongoing riots over the death of Freddie Gray.

The Orioles announced on Tuesday morning that they are postponing the second game of their series against the Chicago White Sox after postponing the first game on Monday. The Ravens were also scheduled to hold a draft party at M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday, but they have called that off due to the citywide curfew of 10 p.m. that authorities have imposed.

Protestors tried to have Saturday’s game between the Orioles and Boston Red Sox cancelled, but the riots were not nearly as intense then as they were on Monday. They got their wish on Monday as police cars and buildings were burned and officers were assaulted.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has acknowledged that the Orioles may have to temporarily play home games elsewhere if the rioting continues. Baltimore began a 9-game home stand on Friday night, and it would be difficult to make up a week’s worth of games.

As of now, the protesters are showing no sign of letting up. The Orioles may have to make a decision to play elsewhere come Wednesday.
