Report: Padres would entertain offers for Wil Myers

Wil Myers rookie

Wil Myers has turned into one of the few success stories to come out of Padres GM A.J. Preller’s extravagant 2014-2015 offseason, but even he may reportedly be a victim of San Diego’s rebuilding plan.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Padres are “open” to trading their first baseman.

Myers could probably fetch quite a bit on the market. He’s taken to first base well and is still just 25, and he has a .281 batting average to go with what is already a career high 14 home runs. Adding to his appeal is the fact that he is under team control through 2019, though his price will go up as he is about to enter his arbitration years.

Myers, a former A.L. Rookie of the Year, was part of a highly-touted overhaul of the Padres back in 2014. While it didn’t work out overall – they’ve already moved one big piece acquired that winter and are trying to trade another – Myers has basically been the lone success story, and given his youth and talent and team control, it’s a bit surprising that San Diego is so open to moving him. Perhaps they’re just doing their due diligence and feel that they could do more to improve their future by trading Myers than keeping him.
