Padres reportedly will not fire general manager AJ Preller

AJ Preller

San Diego Padres general manager AJ Preller was suspended for 30 days without pay by the MLB on Thursday, but it appears that he will not face any further punishment from the team.

According to a report by Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, Preller will not be fired or receive additional discipline from the Padres.

The 39-year-old executive was suspended after a league investigation into San Diego’s trade of left-hander Drew Pomeranz to the Boston Red Sox in July. There it was found that the Padres had failed to properly disclose player medical information to other teams, thus giving them the upper hand in negotiations. You can read the details here.

Preller was hired as the general manager of the Padres back in August 2014. After whiffing on virtually all of his big-name free agent signings and now this incident of sketchy behavior, one has to wonder how much longer Preller’s leash will be.
