Rays screwed by odd quirk in replay rules

Mark Reynolds Curt Casali

The Tampa Bay Rays were screwed out of an inning-ending double play in the second inning of their game against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday because of an odd quirk in the replay rules.

With two on and one out in the bottom of the second, Charlie Blackmon hit a fly ball to right field. Mark Reynolds was the runner on third and tried to tag up and score. The initial ruling was that Reynolds was out at the plate, but the Rockies decided to challenge whether catcher Curt Casali even tagged Reynolds.

The play was overturned upon review, giving Colorado a run.

As the Rays’ announcers explained, the review determined that Reynolds was never tagged nor did he touch home plate. The problem is Rays manager Kevin Cash did not contest whether Reynolds touched the plate prior to the review commencing.

Of course, Cash would not have any motivation to protest the call in the first place since it initially went Tampa Bay’s way, which leads me to say they got screwed in this one.
