Red Sox could be willing to outspend teams by $40 mill for David Price

There is a growing belief that the Boston Red Sox are willing to spend more than any other team for free agent pitcher David Price. How much more? A lot more, according to one report.

One American League general manager told Peter Gammons this week that he believes the Red Sox will offer Price $30-40 million more than any other team. Gammons also said he has spoken to at least six GMs who agree with the reports that Boston plans to go “all out” in an attempt to sign Price.

“I just think that (Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski) loves him and he is part of the job Dave took,” one GM reportedly told Gammons.

When Dombrowski was in charge of the Detroit Tigers’ roster last season, he made the decision to trade Price to the Toronto Blue Jays. However, Price has already said that Dombrowski kept him in the loop and always let him know where he stood.

Price’s history with the Red Sox is a bit awkward, as he has had some testy run-ins with David Ortiz. Perhaps that is why Price made a wisecrack on Twitter after reports about the Red Sox began popping up.

Even if Price is uncomfortable about the prospect of pitching in Boston, there’s no way he would turn down an additional $30-40 million. If the Red Sox truly are willing to go that high, Price will have an easy decision to make.
