I cannot believe that this guy is coming back to the majors. Seriously, Sandy Alomar Jr. is like the modern day equivalent of Jake Taylor. Both old, both slow, both old-school, both old, both heart-and-soul type, both old, both played for the Indians, and they’re both old. Actually, he’s only 41, which isn’t too bad compared to many other players these days, but still old for a position player, no less a catcher. And on Wednesday, the Mets purchased his contract from Triple-A on Wednesday.
Let me just ask this, is it at all embarrassing to be a 41-year-old catcher bumming it in the minors with a bunch of other 20-something has-beens and young prospects? I don’t know what the right answer is, but I’d have to say yes. And I was also surprised to see when I took a look at his career stats that he’s been mostly a backup and platoon guy his entire career. Really? Sandy Alomar Jr. was only a full-blown starter catching over 100 games in a year four times. That’s crazy — I thought he was a long-time starter. Guess not. So just in case you thought he was done, he’s not. Thanks to Wilie Randolph, he’s back in the bigs.
