Sonny Gray scratched from Opening Day start with food poisoning

The 2016 season is already off to a bit of a sour start for the Oakland Athletics.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, A’s ace Sonny Gray has been scratched from his scheduled Opening Day start on Monday against the Chicago White Sox due to food poisoning. Lefthander Rich Hill will get the nod in Gray’s place.

Gray, 26, is coming off an outstanding 2015 campaign in which he went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA and 169 strikeouts, making the All-Star team and finishing third in AL Cy Young Award voting.

It’s worth mentioning that Gray was hospitalized last summer with a bout of salmonella poisoning that caused him to miss a week’s worth of action. As Trevor Hass of MLB.com noted at the time, Gray celebrated his recovery from the ailment by eating Chipotle. But perhaps this time around, the Vanderbilt product will have to think twice before chowing down on that burrito bowl.
