Tim Tebow trying to stay focused, help teammates in minor leagues

Tim Tebow Mets

Tim Tebow is officially settling into his new baseball career with the Class A Columbia Fireflies, and he has some very specific aims as he gets started.

Tebow said Tuesday that his main goal is to stay as focused on baseball as he can despite the hoopla that surrounds him as he plays deep in SEC territory in South Carolina.

“It’s about bringing that same work ethic, regardless of the situation, regardless of the hype,” Tebow said, via David Newton of ESPN. “It’s not about the one day. It’s about the journey, the process. It’s keeping everything in perspective most of the time.”

Though many have wondered if Tebow’s presence will be a distraction to his fellow minor leaguers, his manager, Jose Leger, thinks he can help them learn how to cope with expectation and disappointment — something Tebow confirmed he wants to do.

“Obviously, I’m new to baseball, but I’ve been competing for a long time, and I’ve been in a lot of big situations,” Tebow said. “To be able to help younger guys when they think going 0-for-4 is the end of the world or 3-for-3 is best day ever, you can share those experiences and encourage them and build them up and inspire them the best you can.”

Tebow probably isn’t going to make it to the majors — just check this out if you need evidence of that. If he can be a good mentor to some of the younger players who might, then it may end up working out alright.
