White Sox likely to keep Carlos Rodon out until June

Carlos Rodon

The Chicago White Sox will be taking things slowly with pitcher Carlos Rodon.

Rodon is returning from shoulder surgery he underwent in September. The team initially said he was likely to be out 6-8 months, and it sounds like he will be out towards the later end of that timetable.

MLB.com’s Richard Justice says the White Sox are targeting an early June return for Rodon. White Sox GM Rick Hahn explained why the team is thinking longterm with the southpaw.

“We’re going to err on the side of caution,” Hahn said. “This is about putting Carlos in the best position to succeed for the next several years, not about getting an extra two or three starts in April or May of 2018.”

Rodon was the team’s No. 3 overall pick in 2014. The team is not necessarily expecting to contend this season, but they are eyeing future years and want to have Rodon at full strength when that time comes.

Rodon is 20-21 with a 3.96 ERA in his career.
