Yogi Berra dies – Yankees icon dead at age 90

Yogi Berra

Baseball icon and Hall of Famer Yogi Berra died on Tuesday night at the age of 90. The Yogi Berra Museum announced the news on Twitter:

Berra was one of the most beloved figures in baseball. An 18-time All-Star and 10-time World Series champion, Berra was known for his quips and quotes as much as his on-field success.

Some of his greatest lines included:

– “90% of the game is half-mental.”
– “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded,” regarding a crowded restaurant
– “It’s déjà vu all over again”

The New York Yankees legend made his MLB debut on Sept. 22, 1946, exactly 69 years before his death. He hit .285 with 385 career home runs and is considered one of the best catchers in MLB history. In fact, Bill James’ win shares regards Berra as the best catcher all time.

Berra won AL MVP three times and had a career OPS of .830. After his 19-year playing career ended, the 5-foot-7 ballplayer became a manager and made it to the World Series twice, first with the Yankees and then with the Mets.

Berra was also a Navy veteran who fought in World War II.

One of Yogi’s favorite quotes was, “it ain’t over till it’s over.” For Berra, his time on the planet is over, but his legacy lives on.
