Report: Zack Greinke will opt out of Dodgers contract
Zack Greinke is reportedly exercising an opt out clause in his contract to forego the last three years of his deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The decision does not come as a surprise, says CBS Sports’s Jon Heyman, particularly after Greinke put up a 1.66 ERA for the Dodgers this season. He should be able to easily eclipse the three years and $71 million that was still owed to him under the terms of his old deal, with Heyman speculating that he could get five years and $150 million.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that Greinke’s time with the Dodgers is over. The club will likely try to retain him, and Heyman reports that he is well-liked in the clubhouse and liked this year’s team as well.
That said, virtually every team with a need for pitching and money to spend will at least put out some feelers to Greinke’s agent. He’s not that hard to figure out. When he signed with the Dodgers, he openly admitted that the number one factor was that they offered him the most money. That will likely be the deciding factor this time, too.
