76ers launch official investigation into Bryan Colangelo’s Twitter activity

An NBA executive tweeting from anonymous Twitter accounts in an attempt to make himself look better may sound laughable to many of us, but the Philadelphia 76ers do not believe it is a joking matter.

On Wednesday, the Sixers announced that they have launched an investigation into general manager Bryan Colangelo’s social media activity.

In an in-depth article published on Tuesday by Ben Detrick of The Ringer, Colangelo is accused of operating five secret Twitter accounts with which he criticized members of the 76ers and shared private information about the team in order to bolster his own reputation. In a span of about two years, Colangelo allegedly used the burner accounts to point out the shortcomings of Joel Embiid, Markelle Fultz, 76ers coach Brett Brown and others. As Detrick notes, the tweets “relentlessly defended or promoted Colangelo” on numerous occasions.

Colangelo has taken responsibility for one of the accounts, but he called Embiid to deny criticizing the star big man. Embiid says he believes the GM until it is proven otherwise.

If the 76ers determine that Colangelo has been operating the accounts, it is not out of the question that he could lose his job. When you see some of the ways fans have linked Colangelo to the accounts, the future does not look all that bright for him.
