Report: Becky Hammon turns down Florida to remain with Spurs

Becky Hammon

Becky Hammon turned down the Florida Gators women’s basketball coaching job to remain with the San Antonio Spurs, according to a report.

Hammon was offered the Florida job on Friday, but Swish Appeal says she has turned it down. They say the offer would have paid her more than she makes with San Antonio, but the money would have been in the lower tier compared to other SEC coaches.

Hammon, 40, has been an assistant on Gregg Popovich’s staff since 2014. She was the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA.

Even though taking the Florida job would have paid her more in the immediate future, it seems that Hammon has her eyes on a different coaching path.

The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Hammon is determined to become the first female NBA head coach, so going to coach in women’s college basketball would make it more difficult to achieve that ultimate goal.

Hammon, who played at Colorado State and had a lengthy pro career, led the Spurs to a Summer League title in 2015.
