Dallas Mavericks out of Dwight Howard sweepstakes

Dwight Howard LakersI’m sure this comes as a shocker to everyone, but Dwight Howard/his people have informed the Dallas Mavericks that they are out of the running for the free agent center.

ESPN’s Marc Stein first reported the news that Dallas was informed they are out of the sweepstakes. Mavs owner Mark Cuban confirmed the news with an email.

“We gave it a shot and it didn’t work out. It was truly an experience. … So it’s on to Plan B,” Cuban said in an email, per ESPN Dallas’ Tim MacMahon.

Cuban then sent this message via Twitter:

Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Howard narrowed his choices to the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets prior to Golden State’s acquisition of Andre Iguodala. TNT’s David Aldridge says the Warriors and Rockets are the favorites, with the Lakers in third.

Few believed the Mavericks were a legitimate landing spot for Howard. The team missed the playoffs with a 41-41 record last season and have been trending downward ever since winning the NBA championship in 2011.
