Derrick Rose admits he was in ‘a dark place’ years ago

Now that he’s a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Derrick Rose feels his approach to the game is like night and day from what it used to be.

In an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin on Saturday, the former MVP spoke candidly on his past.

“I was in a dark place years ago, man,” Rose said. “By a dark place, I mean, I was playing revenge basketball, and that wasn’t my way of playing basketball.

“I enjoy competing, but when I came back it was about just trying to get back to the top and proving everybody wrong,” he continued. “Like, I know who I am as a man, I know who I am as a player or person. There’s no point in doing that anymore. It’s just being secure as a person and knowing who I am.”

Rose appears to be refering to his Chicago Bulls tenure and the myriad of knee injuries and the other rumored internal issues that would come to plague it. He didn’t seem too fond of his time with the New York Knicks last year either, but it sounds like Rose is quite encouraged now that he’s on a Cleveland team with a legit opportunity to compete for a championship this coming season.
