Derrick Rose will have surgery for torn MCL on Monday

Derrick RoseThe bad news for Derrick Rose is that his torn MCL will likely knock him out for the rest of the season. The good news is that unlike his ACL injury, he can have surgery right away and begin his rehab process quicker.

Rose will have surgery on his right knee Monday. The Chicago Bulls’ team doctor who performed his ACL surgery will also perform this one.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the length of time Rose misses will not be known until the operation. The possibilities for the surgery are an arthroscopic procedure, which would have him back sooner, or a procedure to reattach the meniscus, which would take him out for the season.

Rose’s camp, no surprise, is leaning toward having the meniscus reattached.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau says Rose is in good spirits and already talking about his rehab.

“We of course feel very badly for Derrick. I talked to him at length (Saturday) night. He’s in good spirits, about as well as can be expected under the circumstances. And he’s already thinking about his rehab. Typical Derrick, he’s concerned about his team, his teammates,” Thibodeau said Sunday.

If Rose’s season is over, he will have played in 49 games over the past three seasons. Rose was the No. 1 overall pick in 2008 and won NBA MVP in 2010-2011.
