Dirk Nowitzki admits injuries could force him to retire after season

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki admitted that continuing injury problems could end his career.

Nowitzki told German magazine Sport Bild that it’s not out of the question that he could retire in 2017 if the pain can’t be managed.

“If things don’t go so well and it hurts everywhere, it could be that 2017 will be the end,” Nowitzki said, via Yahoo! Sports.

“Actually, my plan is to complete the 20 years and play for Dallas until 2018. But just because I have signed a two-year contract doesn’t automatically mean that I will play for two years. It could happen next year.”

Nowitzki has only played in five games this season, and he won’t be returning anytime soon. As he notes, he does have a year left on his contract, and it sounds like he does want to return if he can. We’ll see if his body lets him.
