Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks agree to four-year, $100 million extension

Giannis-Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo may have 13 letters in his last name, but now his bank account has nine figures to go along with it.

According to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Monday, Antetokounmpo has agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 21-year-old is expected to sign the new deal, which is just short of a max contract, on Tuesday.

As a 2013 first-round draft pick (No. 15 to be exact), Antetokounmpo would have been eligible for restricted free agency in the summer of 2017 had an extension not been agreed to by the October 31 deadline. But the Bucks ponied up (no pun intended) and can now enjoy the luxury of having one of their foundational young pieces under contract through 2021.

Antetokounmpo, who averaged 16.9 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game, and 4.3 assists per game last season, is a rare breed in the NBA. At 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan plus excellent playmaking and ball-handling skills, Antetokounmpo is a fiend both in transition and in the halfcourt. His elite combination of size and skill makes him perfect for today’s switch-the-pick-and-roll era of positionless basketball.

Bucks head coach Jason Kidd is committed to fully unleashing Antetokounmpo in 2016-17 by handing him primary point guard duties, so we still have yet to discover what the youngster’s true ceiling is. Now that the financial nitty-gritty is out the way, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride that The Greek Freak is about to take us on.
