Goran Dragic will not re-sign with Suns, wants trade

Goran Dragic

Goran Dragic’s representatives met with the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday to inform the team that the point guard will not re-sign with them after the season. Dragic is also hoping the team will trade him prior to the deadline on Thursday.

USA Today’s Sam Amick reported news of Tuesday’s meeting and says Dragic’s desire to play elsewhere has to do with the roster construction of the Suns. Phoenix already had Dragic and Eric Bledsoe when they added Isaiah Thomas over the offseason, giving them three point guards. Dragic reportedly is dissatisfied with his decreased role on the team and would like to be traded to a team where he could run things similarly to the way Steph Curry does with the Warriors.

Amick says Dragic wants out so badly that trading Thomas would not even help the situation.

Though the Suns are 29-25 and in the 8th playoff spot in the Western Conference (barely ahead of the Thunder), Dragic’s preference would be to be traded to a playoff team. Of course, any interested team would need to know ahead of time whether Dragic is interested in signing a long-term deal with them before they give up anything too significant in a trade.

Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Dragic wants a trade to the Heat, Lakers or Knicks, and that even a deal to the Pacers is possible.
